Description

Letter from Charlotte and Mary Cowles in Farmington, Connecticut, to their brother Samuel Cowles in Hartford, Connecticut. A lame horse prevented Charlotte from going to Hartford that day. She was reading Euclid's first supplement; Mr. Porter's school was failing. Charlotte admitted to Samuel that she had given up "slave sugar" based on comments by Gerritt Smith and fueled by taunts that abolitionists did not know how to sacrifice anything. Mary added a note at the end reiterated the news about the lame horse, which meant Charlotte and Mary had to stay home. Mary begged him to make his quarterly visit.
