He then mentions his recent illness before telling Garrison he "hear[s] most flattering expressions both from Poughkeepsie & Hudson as to the impression left upon such as heard you in those places." He also discusses efforts in the New York State Legislature to introduce a bill, "substantially the Vermont statute" (which restricted enforcing the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850), adding that Dr. Cheever "has been invited to repeat his last evenings dicourse (on Slave laws) in the Capitol next week." He also reports that Lydia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, and his uncle, Shotwell Powell, were visiting him but are "just preparing to leave for the train."
