Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. On verso, the letter is addressed to "Revd. Samuel May Jun. Leicester Mass." and it is postmarked with a blue, circular stamp reading, "Quinebaug Ct. Jul 20."Asa Cutler writes to Samuel May about arrangements for an antislavery meeting in Quinebaug. Cutler says that "the real Antislavery Doctrine is so upalatable or in other words so unpopular with the sects and political parties" that he had to wait for an abolitionist Universalist minister to return to town for his help finding a location for the meeting. He promises May that "a place will be provided to hold the meeting at the time you suggested ..." Cutler also discusses the speakers at the meeting, stating that "this place need[s] strong men" to counter the "error imbibed either by wrong education or something else." He says that "Mr. Holmes the Universalist Minister is very anxious that Mr. & Mrs. [Stephen Symonds & Abby Kelley] Foster should both come."
