He tells Webb that he hears his son, Richard, has decided to come East from San Francisco. May reports that the weather has been very cold and dry. He discusses international postal regulations, tells Webb that he has been unable to find a photograph of Major General George Henry Thomas, and explains that there has been a Republican effort to defeat Ulysses S. Grant.
