Southland College (Helena, Ark.)

Description

The February 1897 four-page issue of the Southland newspaper. "Edited and Published by Southland's Students." The ambitious Southland News suggests both the school's close ties with the community and awareness of greater social issues. In addition to local news and advertisements, subscriptions to Southland News itself were advertised. One article quotes the Meeting of the Young Men's Industrial and Political League on Monday Night January 18: "Our greatest interests will become so interwoven with the interests of the other parts of the nation, that we will lose our identity as the misnamed Afro-American, and become what we really are, and ever should be, true American citizens."
