Inscribed on front cover: Livre vert/Gauffier.Inscribed on front cover pastedown: Gauffier. a l'accademie de france a Rome. Inscribed names, Jean Charles Alexandre Moreau, Antoine Denis Chaudet and Nicolas Antoine Taunay, may be those of fellow pensionaries.Label glued to front cover pastedown indicates Paris shop where album was purchased: Au Chant del'Alouette.Inscribed on verso of last leaf: Anna Maria Fiorilli.Title devised.Sketchbook, in a green cardboard binding, executed during the artist's stay in Rome at the Académie de France as a recipient of the Grand Prix de Rome. Twenty-four drawings depict urban views of Rome, some inscribed by monument (including S. Gregorio, S. Lorenzo Fuori delle Mura, S. Giovanni Laterano, Villa Negroni, Villa Mattei). The remaining sketches are landscapes and figure studies, some after classical sculpture (seated figures from the Villa Borghese and Palazzo Lancelloti, a standing figure in the Villa Ludovisi, a relief group from a sarcophagus in the Palazzo Mattei, ancient chairs from the Villa Negroni, a Death of Meleager derived from the Capitoline sarcophagus copied also by David) and studies after Raphael (School of Athens), Vouet (Christ from the Temptation of St. Anthony), and other sources, as well as original compositions. Thirty-five of the sketches are numbered 1 through 48, the numbers drawn in brown ink. Gaps in the numbering, and corresponding interruptions in the gatherings, indicate that sketches numbered 7, 8, 10, 11, 13-17, 20, 23, 44 and 45 are missing.
