In the letter John discusses the tense political climate across the country, the possibility of secession, and the necessity of fighting: "I heard to day [sic] that the latest telegraphic news was that Gov. Wise had been assassinated, Cobb had been taken prisoner for moving the money of the U.S. to Charleston S.C. and that 7000 abolitionists were marching against Washington to take it. This was said to be true. If this is so I think a fight is inevitable. The people are preparing for it every where. There is to be a meeting here tomorrow evening of the citizens of and about this place to consult and see what shall be done. I think it is time Gov. Moore was having something done. S.C. I believe is doing her part. What do you think of the present prospects for a fight? Do you think Alabama will secede? Don't [sic] you think it the duty of every slave state to secede? If we don't fight now, when shall...we fight? Shall we wait until the North has us completely in her power? No!
