Description

Toni Morrison wrote about the experiences of African Americans beginning with her first novel, The Bluest Eye, which appeared in 1970. With the publication of each new work, both her fan base and critical acclaim grew, and she won the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award for Song of Solomon (1977) and the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved (1987). In 1993 Morrison won the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first black woman to become a Nobel laureate.This photograph by Deborah Feingold appeared on Time magazine's cover on January 19, 1998, in recognition of the publication of Morrison's seventh novel, Paradise, whose success may also be measured by its tremendous first printing of 400,000 copies.
