This oral history interview with Charles H. Witten on May 27, 1987 includes discussion of his education and work experience, his tenure as Dean of Students from 1963-1975, including being Head of Student Affairs, his time in the U.S. Navy during WWII, coming to USC in 1962, running Naval ROTC at USC, furthering his own education, Paul C. Berg, President Thomas F. Jones, being a professor in the College of Education, different student programs created and/or improved upon during his tenure, including: financial aid/ scholarship programs, Carolina Scholars, Volunteer Services Program, Opportunity Scholars Program, starting the councseling bureau at USC, the Metropolitan Education Foundation, the Institutional Research Program, his rememberances of some students in the Opportunity Scholars Program, The American Council on Education, urban renewal and USC, the USC campus' geography, financial aid in the 1960s & 70s vs. currently, the students who seek financial aid then vs. now, U.S. politics in the 1960s & 1970s (including integration and Vietnam), university politics and faculty members, drug culture on campus, Sol Blatt, and the International Student Program at USC.
