Magruder, William B Coal, John

Description

Indenture (contract) of mortgage release dated June 4, 1847 from William B. Magruder of Montgomery County, Maryland to John Coal of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for Negro slaves Eliza and Dennis. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Samuel Nichols on May 4 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on June 28, the document provides the background for the original sale of Eliza and Dennis by Coal to secure a loan of money from Magruder (previously recorded in chattel record liber J. L. M. number 1 folio 318). With Coal having paid back the loan, Magruder now releases Coal from his debt and returns the Negro slaves Eliza and Dennis (no other identification is given of them) to him. (Editor's note: Why the date the release is signed by Magruder, i.e., June 4, is later than the date the release is certified by Justice of the Peace Nichols, i.e., May 4, is not known. Also, during this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
