Description

Holograph, signedEdward Morris Davis is sending the pinking iron and chinaware and wishes something from Maria Weston Chapman's fair. He announces that "Mother" (Edward M. Davis's mother-in-law, Mrs. Lucretia Mott) is preparing a contribution for the Liberty Bell. [See the Liberty Bell for 1846, "What is Anti-Slavery."] He tells that her eyes are being opened to the "retrograde movement of the nea. opponents i.e. Liberty party." Also Lucretia Mott is preaching in many places that the Quaker Society does not like. Edward M. Davis asks who Addison Davis is. He insists that Wendell Phillips must answer Lysander Spooner. Edward M. Davis says "we'll give the American Society $100 quick if it would induce him [Wendell Phillips] to come."Lysander Spooner published a pamphlet on the unconstitutionality of slavery, to which Wendell Phillips published a reply. See William Lloyd Garrison, III. 212, note
