Cummings, Hiram

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Annotation on verso: "Resignation as a member of the Executive Committee of the Mass. Abolition Society, Jan 26. 1843."Amos A. Phelps writes to Hiram Cummings about a committee meeting of the Massachusetts Abolition Society where Phelps was pressured to write a $200 note along with each member of the committee present at that time. Phelps says that he is ill, has no money left, and is unable to pay the note if the situation calls for its payment. He says he cannot “retain a conne[ct]ion, where [he] shall be laid under the temptation of doing pecuniary injustice to [himself] and family, or of being exposed to mental responsibilities which [he] cannot easily meet,” and thus resigns from the Board.
